HANDS ON BIRMINGHAM

Hands on Birmingham has a variety of short and long term volunteer projects.  Sign up for one at www.handsonbirmingham.org.

And, starting in January, you can get free tickets to Walt Disney World for volunteering with Hands on Birmingham. Read the information below and follow the link!

Disney~ Give a Day, Get a Day!

Walt Disney World and Hands on Network are partnering to give 1 million volunteers a FREE DAY at any Disney Park! How does this work you ask? Starting January 1, 2010, you can go onto their website (www.disneyparks.com) and sign up for a service project. Once you complete your project, your volunteer hours will be verified and then you can simply print your ticket voucher online! Easy right?! While Hands on Birmingham will be posting projects on their site, you will have to sign up through them in order to receive your voucher. In the coming months we will be working hard to make sure we have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for you to choose from!  ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

  • Radiological Technologists
  • Allied Health Professionals: , Respiratory Therapists, Medical Technologists (MT & MLT), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs & Paramedics).
  • Physicians:  To provide medical evaluations, treatment, recommendations and care.
  • Pharmacists:  To help locate, distribute, organize and dispense medicine.
  • Nurses (RN, LPN, and APRN):  To provide patient assessment and nursing care.
  • Social Services:  To provide counseling, resource referrals and stress relief activities.
  • Environmentalists:  To assess sanitation issues and ensure safe and efficient shelter operations.
  • Support Staff:  To support administrative and supply operations, patient carte and miscellaneous activities

The primary duty of volunteers will be to respond to emergency alerts to inform ADPH of your ability to volunteer.

  • You may be asked to participating in Public Health events/exercises.  These may include
    • Assisting in Medical Need Shelters
    • Assisting in the Mass Dispensing of Medication
    • Assisting in Mass Vaccination Clinics
    • Assisting with Portable Medical Stations
    Credentials needed to volunteer include:
    • Valid identification
    • Those who work in a professional capability will also have to provide their current professional license.

 ANIMAL SHELTER OF PELL CITY

To Volunteer call:  205-814-1567

  • Cleaning and housekeeping duties at the shelter building
  • Groundskeeping work around the building
  • Bathing, grooming, walking, and socializing dogs and cats
  • Working at off-site adoption events
  • Working before, during, and after fundraising events such as the annual yard sale and Fur Ball, and at Paws in the Park
  • Transporting animals to other agencies or to off-site adoption events
  • Educational visits to schools and other places plus spay/neuter outreach for individuals without transportation
  • Pick up and recycling of cans from the collection bins throughout the county to get money for our spay/neuter program
 TRAINING
The training provided is determined by the task an individual volunteers for, and is done either by shelter staff, or the person chairing the event.  Supervision and instruction are provided during the first few hours of work.    
 
St. Clair American Red Cross
  • ARCHIE--American Red Cross Helping in Emergencies--teams to go out to assist victims during fires.
  • Disaster Assesment Teams--Teams to go out after disasters to assess Damage.
  • Shelter Workers/Mass Care--Volunteers to work in shelters during disasters.
  • Feeding--driving the ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle) and provide feeding to families during disasters.
  • Health and Safety Instructors needed to teach classes for the American Red Cross
